Diagnostic workflow
Submerged Arc Model-Variant Fault Index
Use this workflow when a submerged arc welder fault spans model family, power source, tractor motion, wire feed and arc-voltage feedback evidence.
Database summary
This workflow is for submerged arc welders where the model family is known but the fault path is not obvious. It turns model labels such as MZ-1000, MZ1-1000, MZ2-1500, MU2-1000, MZD8 or MZN8 into a repair routing decision: welding power source, tractor travel, wire-feed control, arc-voltage feedback, output cable / work return, or process setup.
The workflow is strongest for repair scenarios where a user reports a real symptom: no welding output, unstable current, wire sticking, no travel, runaway travel, wire-feed mismatch or arc-voltage feedback instability.

Model-variant routing table
| Symptom | Likely subsystem | Evidence to collect first | Next page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power indicator / fan normal, tractor responds, but no weld output. | Welding source or source-enable path. | Source contactor, output voltage, SCR trigger / CV-CC behavior, work return. | Power-source interface routing |
| Wire feed is unstable during welding. | Arc-voltage feedback or wire-feed control. | Arc voltage, W1 setpoint, feedback wiring, contact tip, wire path and source response. | Arc-voltage feedback / wire feed |
| Travel carriage does not move, moves in one direction only or runs away. | Tractor motor, direction switch or thyristor speed control. | Motor voltage, direction selection, KP2 / trigger evidence, speed potentiometer. | Travel carriage control |
| Welding starts but stops unexpectedly. | Start/stop relay logic, 52V shutdown or protection. | Arc-voltage rise, relay state, stop button, emergency stop, controller supply. | Start / stop / 52V shutdown |
| Current changes do not match command. | Power-source regulation or transformer / reactor mechanism. | Command signal, feedback signal, source output, regulating motor or reactor condition. | Power-source variants |
| Wire sticks to work or contact tip at stop. | Stop timing, burn-back, crater setting, wire path or contact tip condition. | End-of-weld timing, voltage/current setting, wire feed stop, contact tip, flux coverage. | MZ-1000 maintenance examples |
Do not skip model-family identification
SAW model labels can hide major differences: a tractor paired with a thyristor source is not the same as a digital-control source, and a single-wire MZ1-style unit is not the same as a multi-wire MU or MZ2-style system. When the symptom crosses motion, wire feed and welding output, record the model family and source interface before replacing the controller.
